Glancing down at Barbara, they handed over a small turtle, saying, “He will need a new home. Here, you take him.” And just like that, Rodney became part of Barbara’s life. The Turtle with Many Names and a Big Personality
Rodney J. Honeycutt isn’t just any turtle—he’s a turtle with a name full of history, humour, and heart. When Barbara first took him in, she wasn’t sure what his name was, but decided to call him Rodney J. Honeycutt after learning from his previous family. She affectionately shortened it to JJ or simply Rodney. But, as any proud turtle owner knows, one name simply wasn’t enough. Over time, Barbara came up with an ever-growing list of nicknames for her beloved pet—Mr. Smiley, Pookie, and even the less flattering “Poopoo Poopoo,” much to Rodney’s dismay! Despite his distaste for that last one, Rodney knew Barbara’s names were all part of the special bond they shared.
But Rodney is not just defined by his playful names. He is a turtle of science too, known formally as Chelodina longicollis, or the Eastern Long-neck Turtle. His ability to twist his neck sideways into his shell, rather than pulling it straight back like other turtles, is one of the many traits that makes him unique. Rodney, or JJ as he is affectionately called, can thrive in both water and on land, and sometimes he’s referred to as a Terrapin. With his impressive scientific title and his long list of nicknames, Rodney truly is a turtle of many talents and personalities!
